Elliott | Calm Americans

This is stepping back a few years, but I’m fairly sure this is one band that never got a fair shake. Back when “emo” was somewhat of a respectable term (yes, there was a time) these guys showed up with the album False Cathedrals, which, unless you knew someone or scoured used cd racks in Midwest record shops you probably never got a chance to hear ‘em.

Calm Americans was easily the standout track, but the entire album from front to back was a lot like its solid late-90’s rock counterparts (with the emo twist). What with lyrics like “We are the matched and numbered ones who live in this constant disrepair - you may be blessed by your own ghost,” it’s full of despairing yet oddly hopeful lyrics. I’ll still set it up sometimes and listen through - partly for nostalgia’s sake, but also for the same reason one would read a novel through a second time; to catch the things you know weren’t discovered the first time through.
